  1. How about the Southampton area. Lively city with better work prospects than most. Housing costs are reasonable and the city centre is compact enough to have everything in walking range. Failing that the Isle of Wight is cheap to live on as it's not practical to commute to London from there. Nowhere on the Island is far from the sea.

I would try Bournemouth – great beach, nice friendly town, probably a good bet for work – Sandbanks around the corner is one of the most expensive places to live in the country (world?!) so there’s always construction going on there!

If you’re looking for something a bit more ‘sexy’ try Brighton – probably ‘cooler’ than Bournemouth, but a bit more pleased with itself too – both worth a visit to see which grabs you.

Southampton is bigger than both, I know it very well, but it doesn’t really have the charm of either of the above – it’s more industrial, has a huge dock area, and no beach. It’s en route from either of the above to the other though so you may as well stop off and see what you make of it if you’re planning a reccy tour.
