    Queen Victoria first came to Gosport in 1843 when she accompanied King Louis Philippe of France on his journey home from a six day visit. The following year she purchased the Osborne Estate on the Isle of Wight, and she found that she preferred the Clarence Victualling Yard at Gosport to either Portsmouth or Southampton as a destination station for taking the journey across the English Channel to her new holiday home. Two years later Prince Albert and the LSWR agreed to build an extension of the railway line to bring it to a new station closer to the pier and the new station, Gosport Clarence Yard Station, was also known as the New Victoria Station.
