The Vikings neglected to invade the Isle of Wight about a thousand years ago and set up a parliament. That is the main problem.
They do have quite a crooked local council though, and by all accounts it acts as if it is a law unto itself.
Probably the same thing that’s preventing every county of the UK from adopting a similar governing status. Just because its an island doesn’t mean it automatically must conform to a standard. There is no incentive for the Isle of Wight to do such a thing

The law – Man is and always has been (for all modern history) a sovereign nation. Wight has never been a sovereign nation.
