  1. I have relatives in East Cowes (they used to run a shop there close to the ferry terminal), and have been to family weddings in Newport because that's the only place on the island that has a register office. Northwood is on the edge of West Cowes. It isn't particularly posh, nor is it unsafe. You should find it pretty ordinary. As RR says, there are prisons on the island but he's a little out of date - Camp Hill closed earlier this year. The remaining prisons are Albany and Parkhurst but they're on the edge of Newport and so what? You won't notice them. Most men in them aren't from the island. It's a nice island. Its main problem isn't crime, it's unemployment now that the hovercraft factory has closed. Criminals would get bored and move somewhere else. You can do a bus tour right round the entire coastline in a day - I've done it and that was fun. The bus company is called Vectis because that was the ancient Roman name for the island. Talking of public transport, it DOES have a railway running out of Ryde consisting of old trains discarded by London Transport! As a Londoner, it makes me all nostalgic... Have you heard of Osborne House, Queen Victoria's favourite holiday home? It's a short walk out of East Cowes. So if you like historic houses, you and your friend could go into West Cowes, take the chain ferry across the river to East Cowes, and walk there. The chain ferry is an experience in itself - it's kind of like a boat but it pulls itself across the river on two heavy chains laid between the two banks, bump bump bump bump bump noises as it goes. Then there's the Roman villa at Brading, the multiple coloured sands at Alum Bay (everyone comes back from there with a test tube with different coloured layers of sand!) the Needles... plenty to go and see.

It is not at all posh. The Isle of Wight is a very low crime area

Northwood is a village south of Cowes.

It’s certainly not a place for criminals. They are all in the prisons at Camp Hill and Parkhurst.
