Does anyone have any local knowledge on Ventnor Botanical Gardens?

I’m doing a exam question on coastal areas and I thought of doing based on Ventnor’s Botanical Gardens after I discovered a bit of history on the ghosts that still haunt it from the days where it used to be a hospital that treated TB.

I was wondering if anyone had any really interesting information on the old hospital and the early botanical gardens which I could look at as well as any current pictures of the Botanical Gardens

  1. I was born on the Isle of Wight and many years ago I lived in Niton, 4 miles west of the Ventnor Botanical Gardens, when the old hospital was still there. It was demolished some time in the late 1960s or early 1970s. In visting the Isle of Wight in the years after the Botanical Gardens were established I have not heard of any ghosts, but you know what people are like - big old building, associated with medical matters (and therefore with death etc) - bound to be some stories! There is or was an excellent cafe there in the gardens, I had lunch there a few times. Ghosts on the coasts of the I o W are often associated with smuggling tales. Try the word Undercliff, which is the area of land around the gardens and out to the west. Sorry, no pics, try the I o W tourist site. That part of the I o W has a very favourable climate which is why the hospital was established there - cheaper than going to Switzerland to be treated for TB!
