Does anyone know the name of the instrument Airto Moreira uses during the Isle of Wight Festival (1970)?

He’s the percussionist for Miles Davis. It looks kind of like a drum without a bottom, that he puts his hand in.

  1. This isn't Airto in the picture, but just to show the instruments it could be: In this YouTube the dude is playing a doumbek - the hand is put inside occassionally to change the tone of the doumbek http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkkdHXTwI_c (and had one) It could also very well be a Cuica (pronounced "Koo-WEE-kah"), gives off a squeeky sound - tone is changed by how you place your finger on top of head. There is a stick inside that is rubbed up and down with damp ribbon/cloth to induce the squeeky sound. Here is a YouTube of one of the, or the most famous Cuica players in Brasil; his name is Carlinhos da Cuica - he's doing a demonstration of the Cuica. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqh2wWIMDAA (still have one) Here is a Brasileiro pronouncing the word: http://www.forvo.com/word/cuica/ (there are 3 syllables as you can hear if you listen carefully). I was lucky enough to see he and Flora Purim together at our local, yet very popular 3-day music festival at Lake Cachuma ("Live Oak Festival") and was honored enough to spend some time talking with them (in Portuguese, too). It was fun and they played and sang beautifully. He has a mish-mash of wonderful percussion. Here's a picture of my cuica, top and inside (I had thought of selling it like I did all my other percussion excepting sound-effects): http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/oo118/MultiTaskJu/JulieOh/CUICA-1.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/oo118/MultiTaskJu/CUICA-2.jpg
