Has anyone any idea of the cost of taking your car across the Isle of white from Portsmouth please?

Live in Scotland and thought it would be nice to visit when down that way in March.

  1. It's Isle of Wight (not white). They get stroppy with people who get it wrong. The car ferry can cost nearly £30 for a return ticket (ordinary saloon + 4 passengers). It is usually much cheaper if you book in advance on-line. If you're coming from Scotland (great place, by the way) then your route will probably end up with the M40. If that's the case then leave at the A34 and drive to Winchester, then take the M3 to Southampton. It's closer than Portsmouth and the ferry is cheaper. The Wightlink car ferries run from Portsmouth to Fishbourne. These journeys are about 30 minutes. They're smooth and you get to see the freighters queueing up off Spithead waiting to enter the Solent. You also have the opportunity to glimpse what's left of the Royal Navy, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior. Wightlink also run car ferries from Lymington to Yarmouth. This takes you through the New Forest as you drive to Lymington. The Red Funnel car ferries run from Southampton to East Cowes. This journey is about 55 minutes but is more 'scenic' because you pass the big cruise ship terminal and if you're lucky the Queen Victoria or Queen Mary 2 will be at home. All these ports are rail connected if you're coming by train. If it's your first time on the Island then you really MUST visit The Buddle Inn in St Catherine's Road, Niton. (check Google Maps to find it). This is an old smuggler's pub which has a fantastic atmosphere, keeps really great beer (or lager if you really must...) and does darn good lunches. Queen Victoria's "country house" at Osborne House, just outside of Cowes, is very impressive. Allow about 3 hours to see the house and garden. It's an English Heritage place so see their web site for details. If you only visit Ryde then you must have lunch in the Yelf's Hotel. It's good quality and value and better than the fish and chips. Enjoy.

If you go to http://www.wightlink.co.uk/ it will give you all the information. Its worth looking at the special offers as they can reduce the cost significantly. I go over regularly as my children live there.

Mmm, you could check out Wightlink, but you might find that The Red Funnel ferry, though it takes a little longer from Southampton to Cowes, is often slightly cheaper.
