How big a mistake is saying “I’m basically from North Carolina” instead of originally?

To me 'basically' would mean that you had been in N C in early life and had many connections there, but had also been in other places during your formative years . Not really a mistake, just a difference in emphasis. But note that I'm British, real Americans may think differently. I'm originally (or basically) from the Isle of Wight, off the coast of southern England, but I have lived in several parts of southern England and in Australia.
